Vintage Silver Bottle Coaster, Mappin & Webb, 1996
Here we have a fine quality Vintage Elizabeth II Sterling Silver Wine Bottle Coaster in its original box. The coaster has a turned wooden base with a green baize underside and a central silver button surrounded by a basket weave pattern silver gallery. The box has a dark blue satin lining in the bottom half and a padded white satin lining in the upper half.
The bottle coaster is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1996. Founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were rejoined when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the barest minimum of superficial surface wear. It seems likely that it has only seen very little use in its lifetime. The box has a few tiny scuff marks on the outside but is in otherwise good, sound condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle coaster is 12.2cm / 4.8ins in diameter and stands 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at 166.7g / 5.9oz.
There are two sets of hallmarks, one on the outer rim and one on the central button. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter W and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bottle coaster.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
