This is an elegant early Victorian Silver Plate Chamberstick with a removable sconce. The chamberstick is round with a scalloped edge, which is repeated on the edge of the sconce. The thumb rest is on a ribbon shaped handle and has a fan design pointing towards the candlestick. This has a small square hole in it, presumably for the snuffer, which has sadly disappeared over the course of time.

The chamberstick was made in Sheffield by Roberts & Slater and dates to between 1845 and 1858. The firm traced its origins back to Furniss, Poles & Turner, founded around 1810. This was then taken over by William Briggs in 1822, who brought in his partners Samuel Roberts and Joseph Slater, who took over the firm as Roberts & Slater in 1845. It then reverted to Roberts & Briggs in 1858 and finally Roberts & Belk in 1863. It remains a brand name of C.J. Vander Ltd to this day.

Condition is good with just the surface wear that you would expect after over 160 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The chamberstick is 16.5cm / 6.5ins from rim to handle, 14.5cm / 5.7ins in diameter and stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs 317g / 11.2oz.

The inside of the drip tray is marked Roberts & Slater in three separate punch marks and MP for silver plate.
