Victorian Silver Plate Bottle Holder, c.1840s-60s

This is an elegant and practical early Victorian Silver Plate Wine Bottle Holder. The holder has a circular base with engine turned decoration around the body and beaded rims to top and bottom. The handle is adjustable to fit bottles of varying heights and the collar has matching engine turned decoration. Please note the wine bottle is for demonstration purposes only and is not included.
The bottle holder was made in Birmingham by George R. Collis & Co and dates to around the 1840s to 1860s. George Richmond Collis acquired the business of renowned Birmingham silversmith Sir Edward Thomason after his retirement in 1835. Collis continued the high quality silver work of his predecessor and also began electroplating in the 1840s. The company participated in the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in Regent Street. In 1888 the firm was taken over by S.W. Smith & Co.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The adjustable handle works smoothly and is held securely in place by the screw. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Fully extended, the bottle holder is 31.2cm / 12.3ins high and the base is 10.7cm / 4.2ins in diameter. It weighs 392g / 13.8oz.
The underside of the base is stamped G.R.C along with a crown and three floral symbols, which are the trademarks of George R. Collis & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
