Victorian Oak Glazed Bookcase (Hobbs & Co. Lock)
This superb quality glazed bookcase dates from c.1890 and is very much in the arts & crafts style. The lock is stamped Hobbs & Co. The bookcase is constructed from solid oak with two glazed doors which retain their original glass. The inner edge of the door frames have nice chamfered edges. The doors open to reveal five adjustable oak shelves with decorative front edges. Beneath the doors are two drawers, which retain their original brass handles. The doors retain their lock, but please note that no key is present. The bookcase is supported on square legs, out the outer edge of the front legs are chamfered.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall faded. There are some imperfections in the glass as might be expected. The bookcase has some paint flecks and marks. Some of the fixing putty that holds the glass in is missing inside the doors. The metalwork is tarnished. As is mentioned above the door lock is missing its key and the right-hand door sits slightly open as it cannot be locked.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 183cm high, 129cm wide, 36cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
