Victorian Dickens Desk
For sale is a top quality Victorian oak Dickens Desk. The top of the desk has a nice gallery above two small drawers on either side. The desk has three green leather inserts each with gold tooling. The centre writing surface lifts up to display ample space for documents or stationary etc and also reveals two short drawers and one long drawer in the centre above seven pigeon holes. The desk top sits on two pedestals each with three graduated drawers. The drawers have their original bronze handles which are unique to this item. The locks are stamped Hobbs & Co of London which dates the desk to Circa 1852-1860.

Alfred Charles Hobbs was born on October 7th, 1812 in Boston. When Alfred was only three years old his farther died leaving the family destitute. Begining at the age of ten, A. C. Hobbs worked at a variety of jobs ranging from farm help to wood carving, carriage building, tinsmithing, and harness making. While an apprentice at the Sandwich Glass Company, he learned to make doorknobs and became interested in locks. For a while he was a partner in a small firm of Jones & Hobbs, lockmakers. About 1840 he became a salesman for the Day & Newwll Company - one of America's foremost lock makers. Here he earned a reputation as an expert lock picker. He found that the best way to sell his Companies locks was to pick the locks of his competitors. In 1851 he was sent to the Great Exhibition in London where he succesfully picked the famous Chubb and Bramah locks. (The details of the "Great Lock Controversy" are undoubtedly familiar to most readers.)
Assisted by his newly won fame and publicity, he founded Hobbs & Co., London, in 1852. A few years later the name was changed to Hobbs, Ashley & Co. Even after selling out and returning to the United States, the Company retained Hobbs' name. (In 1860 the name was changed to Hobbs, Hart & Co.)
Back in America A. C. Hobbs became the superintendent for the Elias Howe Jr. Sewing Machine Co., (1860-1866), and later the general manager of the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (1866-1890). On November 6th, 1891 Alfred C. Hobbs died in Bridgeport, Connecticut. FB Antiques, long standing members of LAPADA (London and Provincial Antique Dealers Association), has been established since 1960 in London and had three shops supplying the home and overseas trade. We relocated from London 30 years ago to Rayleigh in Essex, to a 40,000 sqft warehouse from which we shipped approximately 120 containers a year. 5 years ago we downsized to our storage premises in Rettendon Essex, and now operate from our 15,000 sqft showroom and workshops, still supplying home and overseas trade as well as many members of the general public.
We pride ourselves on pricing our furniture at competitive prices. We are only 30 miles from London and are open 7 days a week for viewing. We are always willing to do a deal with the client and will try and assist in any way possible.

RESTORATION
In our workshops we restore, make and hand polish furniture as well as refurbishing antique home and commercial bars built to size using as much antique timber as possible. For example, a front and back bar could range from anywhere between 6ft to 25ft+. All bars can be made to size and there are many different models including corner bars, canted corner bars, canopy bars and front and back bars.
DELIVERY
If you need the an item delivered to the UK or overseas this can be arranged on your behalf. When enquiring, please quote your postcode and address in order for us to get a firm quote for shipment. Standard delivery is carried out by a one man independent courier service.
RETURNS
If for some reason when you receive your item you are not satisfied then we will offer a full refund for the item and will allow a two week period to notify us that you wish to return the item. When the item is returned it must arrive at our premises in the same condition as it left. Please note once you have let us know that you would like to return an item, you have two weeks from that day to ensure that the item has been returned to our premises. The buyer is responsible for return carriage fees.
