Victorian Arts & Crafts oak library bookcase
This is a good late Victorian Arts & Crafts oak bookcase featuring simple carved floral motifs, canted corners to the base and planked doors. Made with more expensive quarter-sawn oak it has a lovely warm brown colour with a desirable ‘sun-ray’ effect grain to the wood. It is quite unusual in that the top section can be divided into three pieces making it much easier to move.
It has a moulded cornice above three sections of open shelves and a base with four planked cupboard doors. The five shelves to each of the upper sections are adjustable or removeable and measure 26cm (10 1/4in) deep (although deeper books can be put there because of the open design). The base has a 42cm (16 1/2in) deep removable felt covered shelf behind each pair of doors, the supports are fixed but could be repositioned if required.
The doors are fitted with brass catches and the original patent locks stamped 'VR' for Queen Victoria, whilst there is no key a good lock smith should be able to cut one if taken a lock.
This is in overall good solid condition with lots of character marks. There is a dark mark to the top surface which has resulted in the oak veneer being worn away to the base wood, the left side has a few scratches and the polish has gone dead, there has been some shrinkage to the planks in the far right door panel resulting in a slight gap and the second left door doesn't close completely flat at the bottom.

The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately
Width 274.6cm wide (9ft 1/8in)
Depth 51cm (20in)
Height 273cm (8ft 11 1/2in or 107 1/2in)
For transportation and moving this bookcase splits into five sections (cornice, three sections of the shelved upper part and the base cupboard section). When assembled the top sections are screwed to the base.
