Superb Small C18th Inlaid Walnut Chest of Drawers
This beautiful chest of drawers is of lovely small proportions. It is is an eighteenth-century piece, and is difficult to date, but we would estimate the the piece to date from approx. 1750-1760. It is walnut-veneered over a wooden carcass. The chest consists of two small drawers over four long graduated drawers, which have later wooden knob handles and locks, although please note that no key is present. The bottom drawer is missing its brass escutcheon. The drawer fronts have delicate and beautiful inlay around the edges and around the handles, and the top is cross-banded and inlaid with the same design. The sides of the chest are quarter-veneered. The chest is supported on attractive shaped bracket feet.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition. It does have some signs of professional restoration, and the bracket feet are a later addition. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, some small to the veneer, and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of wood shrinkage, and some areas of cracking, bubbling and minor loss to the veneers. As is mentioned above the bottom drawer is missing its escutcheon. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 107.5cm high, 80.5cm wide, 53.5cm deep (to maximums) Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
