Superb C18th Large Oak Georgian Dresser Base
This lovely antique dresser base is of large proportions and is over eight foot long. It dates from around the early eighteenth century, but may be earlier. It is a lovely piece of country oak, solid and very heavy. The piece has a planked top with an slight inverted breakfront. Beneath this are four drawers with an open cupboard section beneath. There are doors to either side and panels in the middle (which do not open. The drawers and panels are separated by five corinthian-style columns with tramline decoration. The piece is supported on short square leg and has panelled sides. The drawers and doors retain turned wooden handles.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, knocking, and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, which is heavy in places, and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of wood loss and cracking, and the top is uneven. There are some marks and dents to the top and a hole where there was a knot in the wood. The piece shows signs of alteration and restoration over the years - a new plywood back panel has been recently fitted as the piece came to us from an old country house where it had been up against a wall. There are some signs of old woodworm damage - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.
