Small Late 17thC Antique Oak Dresser Base
A charming CHarles II English antique oak dresser base originating from "Lingholm", home of Lord and Lady Rochdale, which sits upon the banks of Derwentwater in Cumbria.
The house itself was a regular summer retreat for the children's author Beatrix Potter and her family and in 1901, she wrote and illustrated a letter to Norah Moore, the daughter of her former Governess about the red squirrel colony in the garden and surrounding woods, one of which she called "Nutkin". This eventually inspired her to write "Squirrel Nutkin" and she used the surrounding area for her illustrations within the book. The garden and wicket gate at Lingholm were also used in illustrations for "The Tale of Peter Rabbit".
The dresser itself features a moulded plank top above two mitre moulded drawers, supported on baluster turned legs.
Dimensions are 117 cm W x 82 cm H x 51 cm D
Condition - good colour. Wear as one would expect given age. There is no evidence that this has been cut down from a larger dresser base. Drawer runners replaced historically. There are "ghost markings" to the drawer fronts indicating earlier handles which have again been replaced historically. The faux escutcheons appear to be original. The base board drawer linings to the right drawer appear to be later. The base board linings to the left drawer appear to be original. There are traces of historic worm activity to the rear supporting apron but this is long since gone and has been treated by us too as a precautionary measure.
Please note image 3 appears to show a very light patch to the plank top to the top right corner. This is infact sunlight reflecting from a window. The top has the same continuity of colour through out.
