A very rare steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer strap watch. This piece has the sort after black gloss dial with 3,6 & 9 numerals, nice original mercedes hands and an automatic movement. Registered Rolex Design 5500. Serial Number 1215200. This Rolex Explorer Ref. 5500 "Super Precision" is a fine vintage example circa 1957. The "super precision" underline version was a smaller production run, and to find one with this particular dial makes for an excellent addition to any collection. It is said that the majority of these relics were only available to the British Military in the UK and Far east during that time period, & some parts of Canada, which is why so few have survived. A few were available to the public and commemorated Hilary's successful climbing of Everest wearing an Explorer. Case Diameter including the crown 36mm.
