Pair 18th C Gilded Pier Tables - Thomas Johnson
A pair of 18th century carved and gilded pier antique tables in the Chinese Chippendale manner. In need of restoration and marble tops. Attributed to Thomas Johnson.
English, Circa 1755/60
We share a sketch taken from the V&A archive illustrating the work of Thomas Johnson.
Johnson, Thomas (1723–1799)
In 1757 Johnson was invited to become foreman at James Whittle’s works, seemingly replacing Matthias Lock who was unwell. It is conceivable that some of the pier glasses and other carved antique furniture thought to have been supplied by Whittle to Petworth House at this time were produced under Johnson’s supervision. Johnson mentions helping to design and carve a frame for Allan Ramsay’s portrait of George III as Prince of Wales which was lost in a workshop fire in December 1759.
After James Whittle’s death in December 1759 Johnson was unable to work satisfactorily with his successor, Samuel Norman, but continued instead to work with Thomas Vialls. He claimed to have been Vialls’ chief draughtsman from c. 1755-1776, which, if true, means that much of the carving done for Longford Castle, Wiltshire (1756), and Burton Constable, Yorkshire (1765), attributed to Vialls, was actually Johnson’s work. Similarly, work done for Shelburne House, Berkeley Square between 1766 and 1768 could well be Johnson’s. He ceased working for Vialls about 1777. (Furniture History Society).
