Opulent amboyna ormolu French double bed
This is an incredibly elegant French double bed. The bed is in the Empire Revival style of its day and was made around 1890. It is an incredibly opulent bed and would have been the height of luxury when it was first made. The bed is made in amboyna which is the most luxurious wood (similar to British burr walnut) and mahogany. It is inlaid with a classical cartouche in the centre of the headboard in boxwood and holly, on a black background. The footboard is inlaid with floral designs and large ewars.
If this wasn't opulent enough it has very impressive gilt bronze mounts with Greek Key motifs and floral mounts which are echoed in the mounts on the footboard rail with circular mounts and gilt bronze feet. The footboard is curved so that the light will bounce off it and it stands on four turned feet. It is very impressive.
The bed is in good condition. The amboyna is well polished and very rich. The side rails are also in amboyna. Minor losses to veneer on one end - see photo. Evidence of old worm, (what piece of French antique furniture doesn't have this!). Treated and filled. You won't find it. The side rails retain their original large French bolts and the bed screws together and is very solid when built.
This is a rail bed so you will need to get two poles to attach on the inside of the rails, there are supports for this on the rails, and slats to run across to form a base for your mattress. These are readily available from any builders merchants at little cost and you will get all the advise you need though it is very simple. The bed takes a standard double mattress, 54 inches wide.
This is a very elegant and opulent bed. It will look good in a bedroom furnished in antique furniture or even in a more modern setting where design is all.
The bed takes a standard double mattress up to 56 inches wide and 78 inches long. The headboard is 53 inches high and the footboard is 30 inches high.
