Japanese carved fruitwood table for Liberty London
This is a delightful early 20th century Japanese carved fruitwood two tier table in the Art Nouveau style retailed by Liberty's of London, circa 1905. The octagonal-shaped table top and shelf are superbly carved with a bold design of sunflowers. The carving, albeit in lower relief, extends down each of the cabriole legs.
This decorative table would make a useful side, occasional or lamp table.
These antique tables were carved by Japanese fishermen to meet the demand in the West for Japanese art and design at the turn of the 20th century. They were imported flat-packed to Great Britain, assembled and retailed by Liberty & Co in their London store. On the underneath of the upper and lower table tops is marked in ink the number 987 which was used to assist in the assembly.
Dimensions:
Width 61 cm
Depth 59 cm
Height 71 cm
Condition: The table is in excellent condition with a lovely natural colour. It is beautifully presented having had a dark brown French Polish removed and the resulting natural wood surface waxed in our workshop. A couple of dark streaks can be seen in the top - these are not splits but natural colour variations in the wood.
Delivery: This table can be delivered to most places on mainland England and Wales for £50 by our trusted delivery man. Alternatively, you can arrange your own courier or collect yourself from the Tunbridge Wells area.
