Good Edwards & Roberts Aesthetic Chest of Drawers
The generously sized pine carcass having stencilled aesthetic movement decoration in the form of Japanese influenced geometric designs, the whole with turned part-ebonised knob handles, the rectangular top above two short over three long graduated drawers on a plinth base, the stamped maker's mark of ‘Edwards & Roberts’ to the top right drawer, survives from late Victorian England.
The chest has obviously been in good use and as such the pine has a good deal of wear and patination to the surface, especially to the top, which shows a bunch of old, marks and gauges. The overall colour is pleasing and she has all of her original knob handles and remains sturdy with the drawers all running smoothly.
The aesthetic movement can be seen as the bridge to the arts and crafts style. It often had formalised, restrained ornamentation, and was heavily influenced by Japanese decoration, knowledge of which flowed to the West in the nineteenth century through oriental imports. It rebelled against the lavish ornamentation and over-embellishment of the high Victorian period, and sought a purer, more precise level of expression.
The firm of Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street, London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. Known and feted as one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers, they worked in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist especially antique furniture in the Neo Classical Adam revival, as well as the French furniture of the ancien régime, and exhibiting a range of ability in their products, from ‘very good to astonishingly good’. The business involved making and retailing their own output, as well as adapting and restoring both English & Continental antique furniture.
A very good quality and rather scarce piece of aesthetic movement furniture by a top maker and in nice lived in condition.
