George VI Silver Sauce Ladle, Viner's Ltd, 1939
This is a good quality George VI Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the traditional Old English pattern. The ladle is made by well known silversmiths Viner's Ltd in Sheffield and dates to the start of the Second World War in 1939. Founded by Adolphe Viener and his sons around 1901, the family name was later changed to Viner. The firm remained under family management up until the 1980s when they were bought by US company Oneida.
This is a small sauce ladle, sometimes called a cream ladle or, in Scotland, a toddy ladle. It is in the classic Old English pattern, possibly the most successful flatware pattern of all time. It is a good size for use on a modern dining table with gravy or savoury sauces or with custard or cream for desserts.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 12.5cm / 5" long and weighs a very respectable 29.5g / 1.04oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "w" for 1939 and the EV makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
