George IV Silver Salt Spoon, W. Bateman, 1828 George IV Georgian Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a well made George IV Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional fiddle pattern. The letter M is elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The salt spoon was made in London by William Bateman Jr and dates to 1828. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her son’s Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.6cm / 4.2ins long and weighs in at a respectable 15.1g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the W B makers' mark for William Bateman Jr.
