George III Silver Cream Jug, P & A Bateman, 1793
Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug in the classic helmet style. The jug stands on a square base, with a round foot, a long sweeping handle and a beaded rim. The initials M.D.R are engraved on the front of the square base.
The cream jug was made in London by renowned silversmiths Peter and Ann Bateman and dates to 1793. Peter was the son of the famous Hester Bateman and Ann was her daughter-in-law, the widow of Hester's son Jonathan. After Hester retired in 1790, Peter & Jonathan ran the business but Jonathan died in 1791 and his widow Ann took over. Two further generations of Batemans followed taking the firm into the middle of the 19th century.
Condition is good with just a minor ding to one corner of the base, which means it rocks slightly, and a small nick where the handle joins the body of the jug plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 11.7cm / 4.6ins from lip to handle, 6.3cm / 2.5ins across the top rim and stands 15.8cm / 6.2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 129.2g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read, although they don't photograph very well. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s with a bar for 1793, the George III duty mark and the PB over AB makers' mark for Peter and Ann Bateman.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
