George III flame figured Mahogany Bombe Commode
A superb early George III flame figured Mahogany Bombe Commode with ebony mouldings, the serpentine shaped top above highly figured, panelled and crossbanded doors flanked by shaped, moulded canted corners and the whole raised on a shaped apron terminating in splayed bracket feet.

The doors open to show adjustable shelves to either side of a locking bar and a tambour compartment to the left hand side.

This has been in one family for many generations and has always been referred to as the Ince and Mayhew Commode.

Circa 1765

Height:34”, 87 cms Width: 43”, 109 cms Depth: 22.5”, 57 cms

The design for this model is taken from the French Commode or chest of drawers with its 3 dimensional serpentine shape which was illustrated and popularised by Thomas Chippendale in his famous work “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director”. Several variants are illustrated and this example with the bold serpentine front echoed by the shaped sides and apron is a very English interpretation.

Whether this fine example did actually come from Chippendale’s workshops or one of his contemporaries in London such as Ince and Mayhew, John Cobb, William and John Linnell etc. is not known at this time but the quality is outstanding.
