Fine & Rare Miniature Laburnum Cabinet
A Rare & Fine Geo IV Miniature Cabinet in Laburnum wood, made for Major Balmain by David Brack, Roslin, circa 1827. See photo 6 for relative size
Labelled: "Made about 1827 by David Brack, carpenter to Major Fletcher Norton Balmain, out of a laburnum tree blown down in the grounds at Rosebank, Roslin, Scotland, where Major Balmain then lived"

Historical note: Fletcher Norton Balmain, born 1782, Edinburgh, died 1868, Woburn. Served in the Madras Army, 1800-1824. Gazetted Lt F N Balmain, acting Adjutant General, 1809 Captain Balmain, Brigade Major to the troops at Travancore, Quilon, 6th Regiment, Madras Cavalry, also 1809. Returned to England Dec 1824 with his wife Charlotte, son James George (b.1814 Madras), daughter Eliza (b.1816 Madras). Apparently retired from the army with the rank of Major, he was living in Roslin by 1827 and was to survive another 40 years. This petite Cabinet was perhaps made as a gift for his 11 year old daughter Eliza.
