This is a fabulous North-Italian carved oak cassone or marriage chest probably from around the Brescia region, dating from the late 16th century, circa 1580. The chest has beautifully carved panels and corbels and has a really good colour and glowing patina to the solid oak. This is traditionally constructed with peg dowelling and has decorative hand forged spear type iron hinges (later replacements, probably 18th century) and its original large candlebox inside. The chest is in really good sound order, with a couple of minor historic splits and bruises to the panelled top which are just part of the character of the piece. The chest has outstanding detail to the front panels with great depth to the carving depicting acanthus leaves to the swept corbels and bunches of grapes on twisted vine as well as an unused central cartouche shield.
The coffer is a substantial size, measuring 152cm wide, 67cm high and 58cm deep.
