Edwardian Silver Rattle / Teether, Birmingham, 1905
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Rattle / Teether with the handle and teething ring made of Mother of Pearl. The rattle has a round central body with the the four rattling bells hanging from it. This is decorated by embossed scrolls around two blank cartouches. The handle is inserted into the bottom of the rattle and the teething ring is at the top.
The rattle was made in Birmingham in 1905. Unfortunately the makers' mark has become too rubbed for us to identify who made it.
Condition is fair to good with a few shallow dents in the cartouches on the body and an old repair to the top ring that holds the teether. It is a young child's toy at the end of the day! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The rattle is 12.9cm / 5ins long and 2.7cm / 1in across and it weighs in at 25.3g / 0.89oz.
The hallmarks, on the body just above the handle, are nice and clear to read, with the exception of the makers' mark, which we cannot decipher. The visible ones show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter f for 1905.
