Edwardian Silver Pedestal Bonbon Dish Chester 1909
Here we have a very pretty small Edwardian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish with pierced sides on a pedestal base. The pierced sides are cut in a fleur-de-lys pattern and the rim is decorated with scrollwork and beading.
The bonbon dish is made by Henry Matthews and assayed in Chester in 1909. Henry Matthews was in business at premises in Vittoria Street, Birmingham between around 1893 and 1930 but like many Birmingham silversmiths he would often send items to the less busy office in Chester to be assayed. Chester hallmarks are much rarer than Birmingham ones and are much sought after by collectors.
The base and pierced bowl of the bonbon dish are in very good condition with no dings or dents but there is one very small split in the beaded rim and another partial split where the beaded rim joins the scrollwork. These don\'t affect the overall appearance or function of the bonbon dish. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bonbon dish is 9.2cm / 3.6ins in diameter across the top and stands 6.5cm / 2.75ins high. It weighs 27.1g / 0.95oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the dish are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter II for 1909 and the H M makers\' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
