Early 20th C. Silver Plate Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl
This is a smart Early 20th Century Silver Plate Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl of generous proportions. Both pieces have a flat oval base from which a high body with two ribs on each side rises to a line decorated rim. The handles are flat topped and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug and sugar bowl were made in Birmingham by Barker Brothers as part of their Unity Plate range and date to around 1900 to 1930. Founded in 1801 by Mary Barker, the firm became Barker Brothers in 1886 when Mary's grandsons were in control. They were based in Birmingham but also had pieces assayed in Chester and London. They were very successful silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in business up until 1992.
Condition is very good, with just one tiny ding in the side of the cream jug, no significant plate loss and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 15.2cm / 6ins from lip to handle, 7.8cm / 3.1ins across and 7.2cm / 2.8ins high. The sugar bowl is 18.4cm / 7.2ins from handle to handle, 9.8cm / 3.8ins across and 8.3cm / 3.2ins high. The two together weigh in at 388g / 13.7oz.
The undersides of the bases are marked with E.P.N.S. for silver plate, the trefoil with three stars for Barker Brothers, A1 for the top grade of silver plate and UNITY PLATE for the Barker Brothers range.
