Early 19thC French Provincial Carved Oak Armoire
Not for the faint hearted this beauty and beast of a Very Large early 19thC Oak Armoire-Which has earns its name from the French word for Armoury or the place a medieval Knight would store his Chainmail and Armour....as we have adopted it into English as ‘War-Drobe’.... and is a piece of furniture which would still hold happily more than one suit of armour.
In a solid light French oak it would have had pride of place in a provincial chateau in France made by the local carpenters from wood grown on the chateau’s estate. It’s recent life has been with a French client of mine but in an English Georgian Country house that has been divided into not so ‘bijou’ 3-4 bedroom apartments. In good solid original condition it has a nice natural colour to the oak and it is decoratively carved from the crown or plinth on its top to the frames and panels of the doors featuring kissing Doves, arrows and a lantern, heads of corn and ribbons etc. All in good order with little to no wear despite the nearly 180-200 year old life.
A large piece that requires a good high ceiling in its next home....it is though cleverly held together by about 12 tapered wooden pegs and ‘knocks-down’ easily to a size which can be transported and moved with ease. The only thing that is a more recent addition to this piece is the brass hanging rail which sits happily under the single and original interior shelf, this though too follows the ‘no screws required’ design that this ‘pegged’ together wardrobe or Armoire epitomises beautifully. The only metal work found on this piece are the chunky solid brass hinges for the doors, the pierced blacksmith made escutcheons and the later but working key and lock.
A piece of furniture you could almost live in and one which will hold a lot of clothing etc....but also one you should check the measurements for before committing to as it is a grand old dame which stands taller than most average UK households ceilings....its priced to sell and a true aristocratic French antique!
Measurements: 244cmH x 155cmW x 59cmD
