Early 18th Century Oak Dresser Base. Circa 1720
This is a fine early 18th Century English Dresser. Circa 1720.
Features:
3 deep drawers, each with raised fielded front panels.
Substantial well turned legs
Deep moulded edges under the top and around the base of the apron under the drawers.
The top, of 2 good wide planks of oak is original and sound with no gaps between the boards. At some time previously the boards have been pulled back together to remove the shrinkage gap, and a narrow strip of oak applied to the back to compensate.
The frame is of tenon and peg construction and all original. The inside edges of the styles and rails around the drawers are rounded back to emphasise the depth of the cushioned drawer fronts.
Good dark colour and wax finish.
Old restoration work:
The Dresser is now in very good condition but has had old restoration work, commensurate with age and wear. Nothing in recent years but when the work was done was clearly to a very high standard:
One rear leg has been spliced, and the other tipped. Very professional restoration with well matched period oak.
The base of one of the draw linings has also been replaced.
Drawer runner and guides turned or replaced to compensate for wear.
The handles and escutcheons are possibly original. - One very good matched period replacement.
