Charles Horner Dorcas Thimble, Size 7
The perfect Christmas gift for the sewing enthusiast with sore fingers this lovely Charles Horner Dorcas thimble.
The Dorcas thimbles were what made Charles Horner famous in that they represented a silver thimble with a steel core making them not only decorative but a truly usable sewing tools. In comparison the cheaper to make standard solid silver thimbles provided little protection from sore fingers because their soft silver bodies were readily punctured by needles. The Dorcas thimbles were first patented by Charles Horner of Halifax Yorkshire in 1885 and very much took the thimble market by storm. Dorcas thimbles were made by Charles Horner right through to the mid 20th century.
This particular Dorcas thimble is decorated with a daisy pattern along with a plain band and plane straight rim. The thimble would fit a medium to large forefinger being a size 7 example.
The thimble is in very good condition with no holes or repairs but it does carry surface scratches commensurate with historical use. This thimble is perfect for the person who would like a decorative thimble that could be used for sewing.
