This pine tester bed is partly nineteenth century, but has some more modern parts and alteration. It is constructed from mostly solid pine. The canopy frame and uprights are antique (and probably contintental in origin), as is the footboard, but this may not be original to the bed as it is a much lighter colour (and may have been limed). Much of the rest the bed is more modern and probably dates from the second half of the twentieth century, although is older in style. The fabric is probably mid-twentieth century in date. The bed has a vintage sprung base, which has been adapted to fit the frame. The sprung base fits a standard UK double mattress, but the frame (without the base) would fit a continental double mattress - although it would require slats to be fitted, which are not present.

Condition: Overall this piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use and would benefit from some sympathetic restoration. Some parts are more modern, and the footboard may not be original as it is much lighter in colour (it may have been limed). There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, which is heavy in places, and the piece is overall faded. One of the joints at the top of the canopy frame is broken and seized and requires repair. There is some wood loss in places, including to the end of one of the canopy finials. There is some damage to the sprung base and some breaks in the springs. The fabric is dated, dusty and worn, and one of the curtain rings is missing. There are some signs of woodworm in places - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.
