C18th Oak Chest on Stand Chest of Drawers
This lovely antique chest on stand dates from the late eighteenth century. It is a nicely made piece, very much in the English country style and is of lovely small proportions. It is constructed mainly from oak, although the sides of the base have stain pine replacement panels. The piece consists of a base section with a single drawer and a lower box stretcher, and a top section with three small drawers over two longer drawers. The centre smaller drawer has a nice serpentine front. The drawers retain brass handles, escutcheons and locks, but please note that no keys are present.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use and would benefit from some tlc. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, which is heavy in places, and the piece is overall a little faded. The piece shows some signs of restoration and repair - the sides of the base are pine replacements. There is some movement in the joints which would benefit from some attention. There is some wood loss around the drawers, and the bottom drawer is missing its handle. There is some shrinkage cracking in places and some marking to the top. The base underneath the bottom drawer is missing a section. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution.
