C17th Oak Coffer with Spung Lock dated 1670
This attractive oak coffer dates from the seventeenth century. It is a nice country piece, and is carved with the initials SB and the date 1670 to the front. We believe it to be original to the period. It is constructed from solid oak with panelled sides and a two-plank top. There is a drawer at the bottom, which retains its original lock, although please note that no key is present for this lock. The coffer retains its original blacksmith-made sprung lock, which has its original working. Inside the coffer is the original candle box with two hidden drawers beneath.
Condition - Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of old restoration and alteration - the drawer at the bottom may be a later addition and there are later wooden and metal braces to the inside of the lid. There is some wood shrinkage splitting, including to the top planks. There are some areas of wood loss, including the carving of the '7' in '1670'. The metal fixings have some surface rusting. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active but have been retreated as a precaution.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 74cm high, 131cm wide, 55cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
