Art Nouveau Silver Plate Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl

This is an elegant Art Nouveau Silver Plate Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl from the late 19th or early 20th century. The two pieces are circular with crimped and folded rims and flat bases. The cream jug has a typically Nouveau sweeping two strand handle with leaf finials. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug and sugar bowl were made in Sheffield by William Hutton & Sons and date to around the 1880s to 1900s. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 13.6cm / 5.3ins from lip to handle, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across the top rim and stands 6.8cm / 2.6ins high. The sugar bowl is 8.6cm / 3.4ins in diameter and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. The two together weigh 185.6g / 6.5oz.
The underside of the sugar bowl is stamped MP and A for high quality silver plate and has the W H & S makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons.
