Antique Set Four Walnut Dining Chairs Quality

Quality Walnut Dining Chairs - By James Lamb - c1870
A very pleasing and top quality set of four English Victorian solid walnut dining chairs by the prestigious James Lamb of Manchester company.
James Lamb, born 1816, was a leading cabinetmaker of his day and founded a large cabinet-making and upholstery workshop in the city of Manchester, England. Lamb led the way in classic craftsmanship in the north of England from 1850-1885 his company exhibited work at the London Universal Exhibition in 1862, and in Paris in 1867 and 1878, winning several prestigious awards. An important figure in the so-called Aesthetic Movement, (a precursor of the English Arts & Crafts Movement), Lamb worked in association with several leading designers of the time, including Alfred Waterhouse and Charles Bevan and is said to have been "…the most aesthetically advanced cabinetmaker outside London in the 19th century". He made antique furniture to Waterhouse's designs for the Manchester Assize Courts, which were shown at the Paris Exposition, and exhibited furniture at the 1887 Manchester Jubilee Exhibition. James Lamb died in 1903 and is buried in St Mary's Parish Church in Prestwich. His company was taken over by Goodall, Lamb & Heighway in 1899.
When James Lamb died in 1903 his obituary in The Journal of Decorative Art endorsed his credentials - 'His name was a synonym for the best in everything that he did from 1850 - 1885, and he towered over everybody in Lancashire and Yorkshire as a maker of high class antique furniture. His name for 50 years stood as a landmark for all that was best in both spheres of industrial art'
The chairs present attractively with the lightly raked back, ebonised detailing and fine proportion delivering huge style and elegance.
A wide stuff-over seat section rides over triple turned and fluted tapering front legs - these having ebonised rings in common with the back rest side rails.
Crafted to be very sturdy this versatile set of chairs offer comfort in use with a useful 44cm (17.3") seat height and a comfy seat pad - certainly suitable for daily use if required.
The fine textile presents immaculately and is complemented by the brocade trim.
A particularly attractive back splat rises from a cross bar to meet the header rail, where squat turned finials cap the upper.
The quality walnut shows excellent colour and grain.
Overall the chairs represent an opportunity to own a fine set of four gorgeous chairs from a notable English craftsman which will serve well and look fabulous for many decades to come.
Supplied cleaned, waxed and ready for the home.
