Antique Indian octagonal table on folding base
This is a finely carved Anglo-Indian octagonal hardwood table on an octagonal folding base dating from 19th Century. The wood is most likely Padauk.
The octagonal top has a shaped edge carved with a snakeskin design followed by a wide border of repeating scrolling and intertwining branches bearing leaves and flowers. The carving is of the highest quality.
The top sits firmly on an 8-sided folding base similarly carved. The frame and cross-brace on the underside of the top provides rigidity to the two when combined.
This versatile table would make an attractive lamp table or drinks / coffee table. It could also be used beside a bed or in a garden room.
Dimensions:
Height 24 inches (60 cm)
Width of top from face to face 24 3/4" (63 cm)
Width of top from corner to corner (max) 27 inches (68 cm)
Condition: The table is in good antique condition with marks, old scratches and stains commensurate with its age. The downward pointing flower finials are missing from two of the eight sides of the base (which can be seen by closely observing the first photograph), though this does little to detract from this table's attractive appearance. With that exception the carving is in excellent condition and there are no splits or chips to the top.
