A very nice, Antique, Gentleman's Pocket Watch made by the Illinois Watch Company, Springfield, Illinois and dating from c1895. The Illinois Watch Co was in business c1869 - 1927.
The watch case is signed by the maker the "Philadelphia Watch Case Co." and stamped "Silverode". This was a special alloy that was developed which went by several different names, for example, "Silveroid or Silverode". The metal consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was far more hard wearing than gold or silver and it could withstand the rigors of everyday use, therefore it was used for pocket watches that were used every day in a working environment like the railroads (railway).
The rear cover screws off to reveal the movement. It is signed by the maker "Illinois Watch Co, Springfield" and has the serial number 1,219249 dating it to c1895. The watch is stem wound and lever set. To set the time you need to slide out the small lever located at 5 o'clock, accessed by scewing off the front cover (see photo). The watch runs very strongly face up but sometimes stops if left in face down position, therefore a service recommended.
The dial is in good condition, signed by the maker.
