Here is a superb example of a Colonial hardwood chest. These are fantastic conversation pieces and make wonderful coffee antique tables.
It has shaped iron corners and other protective straps that were put on for practical use for its transportation around the world.
Whether being lashed to a Man of Wars' deck or strapped to a mule/Camel as it was taken down the silk road.
A rich merchant, an Officer or wealthy family would use this for transporting items of value.
