Made of mahogany that is profusely inlaid with honesty pods, this desk is an exhuberant example of English Art Nouveau by Shapland & Petter of Barnstable. It has stylised handles of copper and brass, a leaded glass back and a bow-fronted drawer beneath a leather top. It has four bookshelves, one of which contains removable pigeonholes. The functioning lock is stamped 'S & P B'.

It measures 108.5cm wide, 50.5cm deep and 110cm high.

It is in good condition with the original finish cleaned and revived and a replacement leather fitted. The leaded glass is entirely intact, as is the inlay, though sections of the mahogany veneer on the drawer front have been replaced. There are a few minor marks and knocks in keeping with its age.
