A walnut hall bench by James Shoolbred
A walnut and brass mounted hall bench by James Shoolbred & Co. In very good and original condition and bearing the registered design mark on the back rail. 640mm high, 570mm wide and 360mm deep. Circa 1885.
James Shoolbred & Co was established in the 1820’s as a draper’s shop, at Tottenham Court Road, London. The company first began supplying textiles to the antique furniture trade. By the 1860’s, the company began designing, manufacturing and selling its own high quality furniture in their thriving and fashionable furniture shop. By the 1880’s, James Shoolbred had expanded to such an extent that the business had to move to larger premises, becoming one of the first large department stores in London, who would supply quality antique furniture and accessories for the Victorian home W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries. Now under the stewardship of Mark and his wife, Louise, we take pride in maintaining the high standards which William set more than 50 years ago.
