Gents 9 carat gold Vertex Revue wrist watch, 1965
A gents 9 carat gold Vertex Revue wrist watch, 1965.
In 1859, Louis Tschopp and Gédéon Thommen ran the Societe d’Horlogerie in Waldenburg Switzerland and eventually Gédéon Thommen took over the sole ownership and he renamed the company Gédéon Thommen. Thommen started to build lever movements with the aim of developing a manufacturing process whereby the components were interchangeable. Upon his father's death, Alphonse Thommen took over the business and by 1890, the factory was producing 13,000 watches per year. By 1929 Thommen had registered the brand name Vertex specifically to market the watches in the UK.
Early Vertex wrist watches were very functional with most being modified pocket watches with simple wire lugs. However, by the 1920s and early 1930s, the fashion for Art Deco soon became incorporated into Vertex watches resulting in some striking Art Deco pieces. Unfortunately the economic crash of the late 1920s / early 1930s hit the watch making industry hard and in fact saw the demise of many watch making companies but Thommen began manufacturing aviation navigational instruments and time pieces, many of which were bought by the British and German armed forces.
This particular watch has a hand-winding movement, calibre 76 17-jewels signed with the Thommen logo, which is working nicely. The movement is also fully signed with the Vertex Revue name.
The watch itself measures 31mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1965 with a maker’s mark for the Dennison Watch Case Company together with the Vertex name. There is a ‘good service’ inscription to the back of the watch, dated 1966. The case is in good condition, just some light scratches to the back.
The lens is in lovely condition.
The signed dial is also in beautiful condition with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
