2 x Victorian Scottish Silver Teapoons, 1868
This is a smart pair of large Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the ornate Queen's Pattern. As is often the case with Scottish spoons, the pattern is struck only on the upper visible side of each spoon. Both teaspoons are engraved W & G at the top of the stem, suggesting that originally they were most probably a wedding gift.
The spoons were made in Glasgow by silversmith William Coghill and date to 1868. Coghill was a specialist spoon maker who worked from premises in Glasgow's Stormont Street, a road that no longer exists but was on the north bank of the River Clyde near Maxwell Street. He was active between the mid-1850s and the late 1880s.
Although the teaspoons have clearly been used, condition is very good with just a little wear to the tip of each spoon from stirring many a cup of tea over more than 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 15.1cm / 5.9ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 39.3g / 1.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion rampant for Scottish Sterling Silver, the tree, fish, bell & bird assay mark for Glasgow, the Gothic date letter X for 1868, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the W.C makers' mark for William Coghill.
