2 x Early 20th C. Silver Plate Serving Dishes
Here we have a very smart pair of early 20th century Silver Plate Serving or Entree Dishes. The dishes are a scalloped oval shape with gadrooned rims on both top and bottom halves and removable gadrooned handles so that the upper halves can be used as separate open serving dishes.
The serving dishes were made in Birmingham by Ellis & Co and date to the early years of the 20th century between around 1900 and 1920. Founded by S & M Ellis in the 1880s, Ellis Brothers were principally electroplaters, although they did produce some Sterling Silver wares too. They became Ellis & Co in the 1890s and opened a branch in New York in 1897, which became the Ellis Silver Co. In the 1960s they were merged into Barker Brothers to become Barker-Ellis Silver Co Ltd.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There is no significant plate loss, just a few small spots on the underside of one lid. The gadrooned design on the lid rims means that they look great when used as open serving dishes but don't sit tight onto the bases when used as lids. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving dishes are 30.8cm / 12.1ins long, 22.9cm / 9ins wide and 13.6cm / 5.3ins high with the handle in situ. The pair together weigh in at 3.4kg / 119.9oz.
The underside of each base is marked with the SM monogram for Ellis & Co and England in script, which dates them to pre-1921.
