19th.c. Military Officer’s Campaign Chest c.1880.
Late 19th.c. military officer’s campaign chest c.1880. In solid camphorwood, a fragrant and pest resistant timber strengthened with brass corners and bindings, with heavy brass carry handles. Original stencil lettering to the outside for ‘C.L Lowder Shanghai’ on the lid, ‘Mrs Lowder H.S Kin London’ on the rear and initialled C.L.L. on the ends. A rare example of the form, this box has an air and watertight zinc lining and three locks to protect (or perhaps keep cool) the contents during travel in tropical parts. Great character with some old wear and repairs to the brass. Front handle is a period replacement, otherwise original through with a particularly good colour. Cleaned and polished in our workshop.
