Description:
This is a fine antique English 19th century Victorian Arts & Crafts oak settle, circa 1890, comprising a two-panel back, which measures 3ft 7” wide, displaying a lovely mellow colour, in excellent original condition. Ideal for use in the hallway or kitchen. Displaying an Arts & Crafts design, with the block moulded frame, the oak settle comprises a mid-height back, with a moulded top rail with two fielded panels below, interspersed by block moulded rails and stiles. The sturdy arms are secured by shaped vertical supports to a solid oak two-panel seat, with a straight frieze below. The Arts & Crafts oak settle stands on simple block moulded feet to the front and rear, all of which are united by a central bar stretcher, for additional strength. The Victorian oak bench frame has been constructed in the traditional manner with mortise and tenon construction.
The Arts & Crafts oak settle boasts a lovely mellow oak colour. As it boasts the original patination, it has a fantastic colour, depth and patination this can only be achieved through the age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This Arts & Crafts oak settle would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway or kitchen, in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This oak bench would certainly grace any home and a great investment, as it’s an extremely functional item.
The Arts & Crafts Movement:
The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America. Initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced, the movement flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920. It is the root of the Modern Style, the British expression of what later came to be called the Art Nouveau movement, which it strongly influenced. Source:
