1927 silver Texa wrist watch, Lever Brothers
1927 silver Texa wrist watch, Lever Brothers.
The watch has a signed Swiss made hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name Texa, a brand name registered by Claude Lyons in 1922. Mr Lyons also founded Vertex Watches, based in Hatton Garden, London and La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
The watch measures 31mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. Although originally designed as a man's watch, it would suit a slimmer wrist or it would work as a lady's watch with today's fashion for larger watches.
The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the hinged case back for Glasgow 1927 with an importer's mark for James Weir. James Weir acted as an assay agentĀ for foreign manufacturers who did not have a British address from which to submit items to the assay office. Weir's company received packages of watch cases, stamped them with the registered sponsor's mark, sent them into the Glasgow Assay Office for assay and hallmarking and then returned them abroad.
The back of the watch has a 1928 inscription from Lever Brothers, Port Sunlight. Port Sunlight was built by Lever Brothers to accommodate workers in its soap factory (now part of Unilever) with building work beginning in 1888. The name Port Sunlight was derived from Lever Brothers' most popular brand of cleaning agent, Sunlight. Port Sunlight contains 900 Grade II listed buildings, and was declared a Conservation Area in 1978.
The case has light marking but overall is very acceptable for a 1920s piece. The lens is in good condition.
The dial has three hairline cracks although they are faint. There is a chip to the very edge of the dial but this is not visible when the bezel is closed.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
