1906 Waltham ‘Marquis’ pocket watch with history
1906 Waltham ‘Marquis’ pocket watch with history.
The watch has a stem-winding movement, Marquis grade, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number 14,808,753 which dates it back to 1906. The Marquis grade was made in relatively low numbers, 4,200, between 1906 and 1908.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover upon which is a presentation engraving to Mr George Martin by the people of Farnworth in recognition of his distinguished services during the Great War. A Mr George Martin, soldier, was registered as living at 12 Alexandra Road in Farnworth and he married Elsie Bond, a ladies companion, in 1919. Further research into his military career might establish the reasons for the presentation of this watch.
There is a discrepancy in the date of manufacture of the movement and the date this watch was presented which suggests that the watch was already a few years old when awarded… something which we do see when War years are involved. We are happy that the movement is original to the case.
The case back has the initials GM.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The signed dial is in lovely condition with Breguet style blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
