18th Century Antique miniature French Commode
This is an exquisite miniature French Commode, dating to C. 1760
In totally untouched condition, it has parquetry veneers to the top, sides and drawers of various woods, including rosewood, coromandel, kingwood and tulipwood.
Ormolu mounts to top corners.
This piece is of exceptional 18th C French cabinet maker quality.
It would have been made for an important household, and for storing small valuable possessions and antique jewellery safely. There is a substantial locking device to the back of the drawers - iron loops protrude through the back boards and they would have been retained by a locking bar and padlock ….unfortunately now missing.
In addition to keeping the drawers safely closed, the locking mechanism may well have been intended to secure the whole cabinet in position either to a wall or possibly on top of a full sized identical parquetry commode.
