Description:
This is a fine antique English 17th century oak settle / bench, from the Charles II period, circa 1680, comprising four panels, which measures 6ft 2” wide, boasting a stunning colour and in excellent original condition. Ideal for wide seating in the hallway or kitchen but also known as a tavern bench, seen in old pubs and inns. This early hall seat comprises a high-back, with a moulded top rail and four fielded panels below, interspersed by reeded rails and stiles. The settle comes with a newly upholstered crewel work swab cushion, which can be removed if not required. The sturdy down-swept armrests are secured by shaped vertical turned supports onto a solid two panel oak seat, with a moulded frieze below. The large high-backed oak bench stands on six small primitive ring-turned legs, united by a lovely well-worn stretcher, for additional strength. The clean panelled back reaches down to the floor.
The 17th century oak settle frame has been constructed in the traditional manner with pegged and joined construction. It is unusual to see early oak settle of this size, in such good condition - this makes it highly desirable.
The oak hall bench boasts a rich dark-brown period oxblood colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour, depth and patination this can only be achieved through the age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This 17th century oak settle would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway or kitchen, in either a traditional or contemporary setting, combining seating and utility. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment.
