A late 16th Century Northern Italian Cedar Cassone with pokerwork decoration dating from c 1590. The solid planked top above a profusely decorated pokerwork front with dovetailed edge. The interior lined with 18th Century " Chintz" fabric 34" wide and in remarkably good condition having been protected from the environment by being sealed under the lid. The hinges are 18th century replacements, there being evidence of repair splices where the original hinges were damaged, probably when the heavy lid fell backwards. The original split pin hinges are still present through the top of the lid ( see photo)
Of outstanding mellow colour and deep patina. Excepting the hinges and repair splices in excellent original condition.
