16th Century Boarded Chest tudor elizabethan early oak %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A late Tudor boarded chest. This little chest oozes lots of character with a wonderful natural colour and patina. Dating around 1560-1580 this hardy survivor is of boarded construction (nailed together) with external hinges fitted to the thick plank top and decorated with reserved chip carving to the lid, front and back of sides. The square wide
sides are neatly rounded to the foot of the stile with incised cross symbol in the cusp of the arch, a possible indication that this early chest was the property of the church. CONDITION Old splits to plank top,one hinge replaced
with a slightly later one, spliced repair to top and slight tipping to stiles, otherwise in good original order.
For additional images and information please email.
Regards David.
