Zuid Holland Gouda Pottery Jug
A most striking little jug offered in excellent condition.
History of Gouda:
As with many pottery names there isn't a 'Gouda' factory, Gouda is an area and as such a generic name given to most pottery from Holland excepting of course, Delftware.
As with British ceramics it is the area that dictates the locations where there factories start, Gouda had an abundance of clay which was also supplemented with clay for Britain.
Records show that Gouda had produced clay pipes as far back as 1740. However it wasn't until 1898 that Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, or PZH went into production producing glazed pottery. The matt glazing on our beautiful little jug was pioneered latter in around 1910.
