World War One Sprigged Stoneware Teapot, 1915 World War One Teapot Stoneware %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We love this First World War teapot! It's a classic teapot shape and seems to fit the sombre times in which it was made with a straightforward beige glaze on the body decorated with plain white ferns and a basket of flowers on each side and four daisies on the lid.

What makes this something special is the inscription that has gone onto the teapot before it was fired, so obviously very much made to order. The text reads "To Mrs Wenmouth, April, 1915. Present from Private H. Briggs." We can only wonder who Mrs Wenmouth was and what was her relationship to Private Briggs. Was she perhaps a nurse who cared for a wounded soldier? Was she a landlady who had a young Private billeted with her? Did she supply refreshments to troops travelling to or from the front? Was there a romantic attachment of some sort? Whatever the connection was, Private H Briggs was obviously grateful enough to have this teapot made and given to Mrs Wenmouth as a gift. It's a small snapshot into everyday life for a World War One soldier and an act or acts of kindness that were clearly greatly appreciated.

The teapot is in excellent condition and looks as though it has never been used. It has no chips or cracks. It has clearly been well looked after for over 100 years, an indication of how important it has been to the family that received it. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teapot is a good size, being 23.5cm / 9.4" from spout to handle, 15cm / 6" in diameter across the body and stands 18cm / 7.25" high to the top of the finial.

There are no makers marks or stamps to indicate where or by whom the teapot was made but the inscription obviously gives us the date of 1915. Teapots of this type and style were made in both Staffordshire & Derbyshire in the late 19th and early 20th century and often personalised at the customer's request.
