ARTIST INFORMATION
Forbes was a Canadian painter primarily active in England. She was friends with the artists James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Walter Sickert, both of whom influenced her work. Her etchings in particular are said to show the influence of Whistler. She studied at the South Kensington School of Art, now the Royal College of Art, New York Arts Students League, in Munich and at the art colony in Pont-Aven in Brittany. Much exhibited in many galleries including The Royal Academy on many occasions. In the Autumn of 1885, Forbes and her mother moved to Newlyn, Cornwall. She became a popular figure in the artistic community of Newlyn and was much involved in the city's artistic organizations, such as the dramatic society. In 1889 she married Cornish painter Stanhope Forbes and together they formed The Newlyn School. In 1893 she won a Gold Medal for an oil painting at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Sadly Forbes died of cancer at the age of 52 and her obituary mourned the loss of "the Queen of Newlyn".
